Angela O'Rand Duke University, Durham, NC, USA

Angela M. O Rand has been on the faculty of the Department of Sociology of Duke University for 20 years, during which she has also been affiliated with the university’s Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and the Center for Demographic Studies. Over this time she has published extensively on the diverse and changing patterns of the educational, familial, and occupational life courses, with special emphases on family and work transitions from midlife to old age.  With her colleagues, she has produced groundbreaking studies of joint retirement patterns among older couples, returns to formal education and training by middle-aged populations, marital dissolution in late middle age, and the effects of changing workplace benefits for retirement and health care on work careers and retirement patterns.  Her recent interests are focused on cross-national variations in policies toward aging populations and their outcomes.  These research efforts have convinced her of the importance of cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration for extending the frontiers of knowledge on aging and the life course.
