Atiq Kainan Ahmed is a prominent regional expert from Asia-Pacific with extensive experience in urban-rural climate resilience, adaptation, multi-hazard early warning systems, social-ecological resilience, and disaster risk management. He is currently working at Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), a regional inter-governmental organization based in Bangkok. He brings about three-decades of prolific cross-country experiences of bringing together science, institutions, systems and societal applications for managing diverse urban-rural risks across scales. With his diverse experiences, applied anthropological background and strong multi-disciplinary-multi country expertize, he spearheaded several pioneering endeavors including: development of “coastal community resilience (CCR)” framework in the Indian Ocean region with NOAA-USAID; formulation of “climate-smart disaster risk management (CSDRM)” approach with IDS-SCR; application of “climate risk management (CRM)” in Asian countries with ADPC; d) facilitation of Bangladesh “National Adaptation Programs (NAPA)”, first comprehensive NAPA globally; introduction of “livelihoods-based adaptation to climate change (LACC)” framework with integration of “climate forecast application (CFA)” for climate services with NMHS and sectors; designing of donor strategies related to climate & environment for countries; among others. He was a key expert of many trans-country/regional mechanisms including WMO’s Typhoon Committee SSOP, various “Trans-Boundary Resilience” initiatives focusing EWS in greater Deltas, formulation of “Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Systems” with IOC-ICG and many more. In past decades, he has worked on more than two dozens of portfolio initiatives in more than 15 countries involving with ADPC, UNESCAP, USAID/OFDA, DFID, ADB, NOAA, Norad, UNDP, Govts and CSO among others. Currently, he is leading two major programs including: “Urban Resilience to Climate Extremes in SEA” (supported by Norad), and IDM-RAND resilience program (supported by USAID/OFDA). He holds two master degrees, studied at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, University of Washington, and other Jahangirnagar University. He is an honorary Fellow of Society for Applied Anthropology, USA, an elected member of American Meteorological Society (AMS) and member of Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI).
