Darren F Boehning Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, USA

Dr. Darren Boehning is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. The Boehning laboratory is interested in cell death signaling in health and disease. In particular, his laboratory investigates the central role of the IP3 receptor calcium channel in mediating apoptotic cell death. His group found that the IP3 receptor is essential to the progression of most cell death paradigms, and how this channel is activated during disease. Of note, his group discovered how this receptor contributes to apoptotic resistance in lymphoma and other cancers. More recently his laboratory has become interested in how rapid lipidation of signaling proteins regulates the assembly of macromolecular signaling complexes to modulate calcium signaling and cell death. Finally, in collaboration with clinicians he has shown in animal models and in patients that increased IP3 receptor activity after traumatic injury leads to systemic inflammation and metabolic syndrome which contributes to morbidity and mortality.
