Erik Schneiderhan University of Toronto, Canada

Erik Schneiderhan is an associate professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada. His research concentrates on dilemmas and contingency in social action. This work has its most recent expression in his book The Size of Others’ Burdens: Barack Obama, Jane Addams, and the Politics of Helping Others (Stanford 2015). He also studies how deliberative democracy works—this line of research recently received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The particular focus of this ongoing project is to study the ways in which ethnicity and communication rules influence political deliberation in small-group interactions across a variety of contexts.
