Joseph Levitan, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada). His research and practice center on socially just educational change and leadership approaches. He works collaboratively with Indigenous, First Nations, and Inuit students, educators, and community members to ensure access to identity-responsive and culturally grounded schools. His research engages in collaborative action-research methods to uncover structural and systemic barriers to students’ self-defined and community-defined success, as well as ways to overcome those barriers. He has published widely on these topics, including in Teachers College Record, Leadership and Policy in Schools, Action Research, and the American Journal of Education. He has also co-founded two educational nonprofits aimed at improving the quality of education in rural Indigenous communities in Peru.
