It explores the importance of PE for children's learning and advocates a developmental approach to teaching; it also examines a model of professional practice based on personal reflection and self-appraisal, and emphasises the importance of continuing professional development. A rich selection of practical activities is provided, which cater for children's learning needs across the primary years. I used this text in a first year Curriculum Design module whereby we look at different issues in designing a curriculum through the lense of a selection of curriculum subject areas. We used PE as one curriculum subject area in this module this year and hence this text provided students with key topics to consider (e.g. health and safety, and contemporary issues). This was particularly useful for this group of students as they are on an Education degree programme rather than a specialist PE programme and hence most did not come with any particular specialist previous knowledge or interest in PE per sé. Hence the topic areas covered and the very student friendly way this text is written was very helpful.
