Peter Squires is a Professor Emeritus of Criminology and Public Policy at the University of Brighton, now focussing upon research, writing and consultancy activities. He has an extensive range of teaching and research experience extending across many sub-divisions of contemporary criminology. He was appointed to the REF2014 Sub-Panel 22 in 2011; has been a member of the ESRC Peer Review College since 2006 and a member of the British Society for Criminology Executive Committee since 2007. He became a member of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2008 and the Royal Society of the Arts in 2009. He was elected as President of the British Society of Criminology (in May 2015) for four years. He has developed a significant international reputation and has participated in a wide range of European and International seminars, conferences and projects in a number of his areas of expertise. He was invited to join the ACPO/NPCC Themed National Independent Advisory Group (TNIAG) on Criminal Use of Firearms in 2011, and was co-opted to an HMIC Review group on Firearms Licensing during 2014-15 and recently joined the National Crime Agency Firearms Prevent Board. So far he has published 11 books (single or jointly authored or edited), and has considerable experience in media relations, contributing regularly to TV, Radio and news-media debates on crime and criminal justice.
